SOUNDS OF ILLUSIONS
  sounds of moving images
 by Sven E Carlsson

IN REAL LIFE IMAGE AND SOUND ARE PERCEIVED AS "ONE"

Sound is waves  (emission) coming from a vibrating  source (emitter).

Sounds appear to be explained by reference to the objects that "cause" them

Sound Emitter = Sound Source
Sound Emission = Sound Waves

IN MEDIA PRODUCTION IMAGE AND SOUND ARE SEPARATED

It is possible to reassociate image with modified or new sounds:

Reassociation occurs for many reasons such as [1]

IN AUDIENCE RECEPTION IMAGE AND SOUND ARE "ONE" (again)

-

This is a illusion because…

Emission

Pseudo Emitter Actual Emitter

  • Sound emitters on screen are pseudo-sound-emitters.
  • Loudspeakers are actual emitters.
Michel Chion use the term Spatial magnetization for the mental relocation of the sound emitter to an object on screen. This is made possible by the Audiovisual contract - the agreement to accept the pseudo-sound-emitters on screen as real.
